About this course

On completion of this module, you will be able to evaluate techniques for supplier development and innovation within procurement and supply and assess the environmental factors that influence improvement strategies. As organisations increasingly look to procurement to drive competitive advantage, this module supports you in understanding how innovation emerges within supply chains, how suppliers can contribute to improvement initiatives, and how procurement leaders can create the right conditions for advancement. You will examine how collaborative working, technological adoption, cross-functional integration, and appropriate incentives can help suppliers deliver new ideas, higher quality, improved processes, and enhanced value.The module introduces you to the methods organisations use to promote supplier development, such as cross-functional working, early supplier involvement, innovation councils, and supplier forums. You will consider how simultaneous engineering, data analytics, e-procurement systems, and integration tools can strengthen communication, reduce lead times, and improve overall supply chain responsiveness. In addition, you will explore how environmental and sustainability considerations shape innovation strategies across supply chains. This includes lifecycle analysis, design for disassembly, sustainable material choices, and adherence to standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 20400. You will also evaluate methods for incentivising suppliers to engage in improvement activities, including performance-linked rewards, clear contract criteria, continuous improvement frameworks, and shared benefits.
