Masters of Psychology

Guided by the educational principle of “researching the mind and supporting the person,” the Graduate Program in Psychology aims to foster highly skilled professionals capable of applying their knowledge of psychology in many different settings. Students in the master’s program are trained as specialized professionals who provide a range of supportive services in response to contemporary societal needs, while also gaining the skills to pursue a research career. To do so, they take a wide range of courses encompassing both psychology and clinical psychology as part of a curriculum that emphasizes experiments and practical training. The master’s program is divided into clinical psychology and psychology concentrations. The clinical psychology concentration trains professionals capable of working in a range of fields including healthcare, social welfare, education, the justice and criminal systems, and industry and labor through lecture courses on various psychological treatments such as client-centered therapy, psychoanalysis, group and community approaches to therapy, body-oriented psychotherapy, family therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as practical training within and outside of the school. The psychology course gives students a solid grounding in the studies of cognitive, physiological, lifelong developmental, social, industrial and organizational, and educational psychology, as well as psychometrics, with the objective of training professionals who can respond to a range of contemporary social problems.

1. Applicant Criteria
   1. Demonstrates the fundamental knowledge and skills, reasoning, judgment and expression abilities acquired at the undergraduate level (or master’s level for doctoral programs) and required to engage in high-level research in psychology.
   2. Understands the university’s educational philosophy of “Do for Others”, possesses a keen insight into the various issues arising in present-day society, as well as the ambition and potential to contribute to an inclusive society through advanced psychology research at the Graduate School as an educational researcher or high-level specialized professional.
   3. Possesses an interest in the nature of people, along with the ambition and relevant fundamental qualities to pursue research and practice in specialized fields of psychology, and to demonstrate this specialization through one’s profession.
   4. Possesses fundamental learning in psychology through an undergraduate course (or master’s course for doctoral programs), an interest in higher-level psychology specializations, as well as a strong desire to become a researcher or practitioner with knowledge of psychology theories and practice.
2. Basic Policy for Selection of Students
   Assess whether an applicant possesses the fundamental abilities, ambition and qualities outlined in “Applicant Criteria” above.
3. Types of Student Selection and Evaluation Methods
   1. Student selection is based on written examinations and interviews, or interviews only, evaluated according to the “Basic Policy for Selection of Students”.
   2. Written examinations focus on assessing the fundamental academic abilities acquired at the undergraduate level (or master’s level for doctoral programs). Interviews focus on evaluating the ambition and qualities needed to contribute to society as an educational researcher or high-level specialized professional.

The Clinical Psychology Center at the Faculty of Psychology Institute for Psychological Research offers consulting services to community residents struggling with a variety of psychological issues. The Center’s facilities include a playroom, miniature garden room, activity room, and consultation rooms. In addition to community services, the Center serves as a clinical training facility for graduate students that is used for counseling and supervision. It also houses classrooms, laboratories, and computer rooms for graduate students, offering a centralized environment for research and learning.
